Cottage School Acres is a small farm and, as such, we have found it's better to not put all our eggs in one basket…especially where crops and the resulting harvest are concerned. Increased rainfall, delayed planting, a farm truck accident and a early frost have all impacted what we projected for our 2009 harvest.
Everyday and every experience is a learning process for us,,,and we've learned alot!.
2009 Harvest
Organic Winter Wheat
- Planted: 110 acres, Fields 3,4,5 and 6
- Harvest Projection: 50 bushels/acre
- Yield: 30 bushels/acre
- Reason: Increased rainfall, delayed harvest due to increased rainfall
Organic Black Beans
- Planted: 30 acres, Field 3
- Harvest Projection: 30 bushels/acre
- Yield: None
- Reason: Delayed planting due to increased rainfall
- Reason: Early frost before beans matured
Organic Sunflowers
- Planted: 20 acres, Field 4
- Harvest Projection: 1200 lbs/acre
- Yield: None

- Reason: Plants only germinated 1 out of every 6 rows due to equipment failure for planting depth
2010 Plans
As an organic farmer, it's too risky to plant a crop without a market for it. Cottage School Acres is pleased to have contracted with Trinidad-Benham for Chipotle Mexican Grill for our black beans.
- Fields 5 and 6 to be planted with black beans
- Fields 3 and 4 to be planted with popcorn if contract is secured
